Gossen specialises in light, lux and ambient meters, and at the top of its range is the Gossen Starlight which boasts three individual meters in one: an exposure meter for ambient and flash output, a CINE meter for filming applications and an instrument to read and measure illumination intensities and luminance.
The Starlight's outer shell is plain and utilitarian, but it feels robust and it's water resistant. Its controls and logically laid out, and the swivel head offers reflected light measurements with a 1° angle through the optical viewfinder.
Incident readings can be taken with the white diffuser raised or lowered to utilise the spherical or flat-plane characteristics from the invacone. Flash output is measured automatically by adjusting it to non-crd setting or it can be connected to a sync lead in cord mode. There are plenty of other tricks too, like multiple flash calculations.
VERDICT: Those looking for an all-singing, all dancing flash/light meter don't be disappointed.
