What the Press Say . . . Tamron Lenses

17-35mm f2.8-4 Di

Optically this lens is a cracker, with distortion very well controlled, even at the 17mm end of the zoom. Used at the maximum aperture the edge definition is good, with better sharpness available by stopping down a couple of stops. The lens produces contrasty results, and while flare is an ever-present problem with wide-angle lenses, with the supplied lens hood in place it's kept to a minim.

Overall this is an impressive optic for both digital and conventinal SLR users alike.

The Verdict: Whether you are looking for an ultra wide-angle lens for a film SLR or a high quality standard lens for a digital camera, this is a classy optic for the money.

17-35mm f2.8-4 Di

The Verdict: The Tamron 17-35mm f2.8-4 makes a fitting comparison to the 28-75mm f2.8 from the same stable. They handle similarly, too, although the 17-35mm is noticeably lighter.

Though overlapping from 28mm to 35mm, they might be considered a complementary pair, delivering overall a similar level of image quality. In this overlap section, however, the 17-35mm tested gave better sharpness. For the 1.4-1.5x digital camera, the 35mm format equivalent of about 25-44mm is useful. Performance on this sensor format will be excellent. On its wider settings it may not be a tool for the architect but, like its longer-span colleague, it is an able workhorse at a reasonable price.
